If the word resolutions conjures up feelings of anxiety or unfulfilled promises, come join me instead in finding a ONE-WORD THEME to challenge and unify your 2017. I like to think of my one-word as a thread that weaves together all my goals and actions throughout the year. Don’t overthink this— there is no wrong word! (Some are definitely more uplifting than others. Go for those!)
Last year my one-word theme for the year was BOLD. I declared it my year to be SEEN and quite honestly, it served me well. Every time I would start having doubts about getting myself out the door, I would think about being BOLD.That one word helped me take the stage (several times!), hit send when my palms were sweaty and my heart was racing when publishing a piece, and to teach workshops. I learned to stand for applause. I learned to focus on the value I was giving and to focus less on my fears. Every single BOLD action was both terrifying and rewarding. All of these things I did before I felt I was ready. When do we ever really feel ready to take the next step?. Being BOLD reminded me to do it anyway.
When I started to think about my 2016 year, I realized how much time I had spent outside my comfort zone. I was proud of what I had accomplished but I also started to crave more time to write and to finish those twelve thousand projects I had started. I took time to ask myself what really fueled my soul and realized I was in need of connection- to self, to deepening my relationships, and to finding my real purpose for writing.I decided to select Connection as my one-word for 2017. I looking forward to setting a slower pace, drawing inward to become stronger and spending time with people who challenge me and those around them through compassion and commitment to be the best version of ourselves.
Each month I will send out ideas and stories about how your one-word theme can help you reach your goals and be the driving force in this year of transformation and change. I am excited to experiment with this concept again and can’t wait to be on this “trip around the sun” together.
What word did you decide would be your theme for 2017? Please share!
